Introduction
The Ashraf/Sadat of the Ashrafi dynasty, i.e. the progeny of Hadrat Sayyad ‘Abd al-Razzaq Noor al-‘Ayn, Rehmatullahi ta'ala alaih, are undoubtedly Najîb at-tarfayn. [Of Noble descent from the Blessed Mother & Father of Hadrat Sayyad ‘Abd al-Razzaq Noor al-'Ayn, Rehmatullahi ta'ala alaih, who trace their lineage back to Sayyidah Fatimah al-Zahrah, Radi Allahu ta'ala anha & Sayyadina Amir al-mu'minin, Hadrat Alî, Karrama Allahu wajhahu al-karim, respectively].
Their truthful descent is beyond criticism and adverse comments. To contest their rightful descent is synonymous to denying the brightness of the mid-day sun. Nevertheless, what can be done or said for in every era certain people have always co-existed whose purpose and intention is to dishonour and blemish the Religious Dignitaries of Islam. Unfortunately, we find such a group in our age too.
To engage in any form of discussion with such people is equal to determining one’s own ignorance. However, it is necessary to proclaim the truth to our sincere followers so that their hearts are not afflicted by the fatal illnesses of suspicion and doubt.
The Most Beloved Messenger of Allah, Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam, said:
There are six whom I curse, Allah curses, & who are cursed by every Prophet, 'alayhim as-salam, whose supplications are answered: he who denies Allah's destiny, he who adds anything to the Book of Allah, he who rules arrogantly, he who considers what Allah has prohibited to be lawful, he who deems it permissible to treat my progeny in ways Allah has forbidden [such as insulting or reviling them] and he who abandons my Sunnah [in disdain].
Kitab al-Kabaa'ir: Book of Major Sins - Imam Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Qaymaz, Abu 'Abdullah Shams ad-Din al-Dhahabi, the great Hafiz al-Hadith & Historian of Islam. [B673/1274-D748/1348] Narrated by Tirmidhi.

Respect of Sayyads
Love and respect for the descendents of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu Ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam)
It is A'la Hadrat Azeem al-Barkat Imam-e-Ahl as-Sunnat Mujaddid e Deen o Millat Ash Shah Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Fadil-e-Barelvi (Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu) who showed the Muslim world how to respect the descendants or family of the Most Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ta'ala alayhi wa Sallam). His entire life is filled such with incidents.
Many are aware of this famous incident. Once, Imam Ahmad Rida Khan (Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu) was invited to the home of a certain person. In those days, the Ulema were carried in chariots as a means of transport. A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu) was sitting in one of these chariots that was carried by the chariot-bearers. As they proceeded along the way, Sayyadina A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu) suddenly commanded the chariot-bearers to stop. He immediately alighted from the chariot and asked, "Who is a Sayyad from amongst you? I am receiving the scent of a Sayyad." One of the chariot-bearer's, who was a Sayyad, was too scared to speak. Nevertheless, when A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu anhu) further prompted that person to reveal himself, he came forward and admitted that he was Sayyad.
With tears in his eyes, A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu anhu) fell at his feet and began asking for pardon. The Sayyad continuously asked A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu anhu) to refrain from doing so but, A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu anhu) continued asking for pardon, by saying, "Please forgive me. What would I do on the Day of Qiyamah if the Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Alayhi wa Sallam) asks me concerning this incident, and says to me that I showed disrespect to his family?"
The Sayyad readily forgave A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu anhu). But this A'ashiq-e-Rasool (Salla Allahu Alayhi wa Sallam) was yet not satisfied. He commanded the Sayyad to sit on the Chariot, and placing the chariot on his blessed shoulders, carried the Sayyad for the same distance which he had been carried!
Allahu Akbar! Those who had been witnesses to this incident could not believe that the Imam of the Ahl as Sunnah wah Jama'ah, the Mujaddid of Islam was carrying a chariot-bearer on his blessed shoulders. But to A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu anhu), that person that he was carrying was no ordinary chariot-bearer. It was a family of the Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Alayhi wa Sallam)!
It has also been stated that a child, who was a Sayyad, used to live in the vicinity of Bareilly Shareef. The child used to play in the presence of A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu anhu) while A'la Hadrat (Radi Allahu anhu) would be busy writing. EACH TIME THAT THE CHILD RAN PASS THE DOOR OR CAME IN THE PRESENCE OF A'LA HADRAT (RADI ALLAHU ANHU), HE WOULD STAND UP IN RESPECT FOR THAT CHILD. EVEN WHEN THE CHILD PASSED THE DOOR TEN TIMES IN A DAY, THEN A'LA HADRAT (RADI ALLAHU ANHU) USED TO STAND UP TENS TIMES IN A DAY IN RESPECT FOR THAT SAYYAD CHILD.
When Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Radi Allahu anhu) was asked about the Islamic punishment that was to be meted out to a Sayyad, he remarked, "Even though a Judge is called upon to declare judgement and punishment upon a Sayyad, and the penalty that he has decreed is within the tenets of Islam, he (the Judge), should not have the Niyah (intention) that he is punishing the Sayyad. Rather, he should think that a small amount of mud has smeared itself on the Sayyad's feet, which he is merely washing away". (Al Malfooz Shareef)

Sayyad Muhammad Madani Qaderi Chisti Ashrafi al-Jilani
Hadrat Shaykh al-Islam, ‘Allama Sayyad Muhammad Madani Ashrafi al-Jilani traces his lineage in direct descent from Makhdoom al-Afaq, Hadrat Sayyad ‘Abd'al-Razzaq Noor-al‘Ayn (b. 765 AH). Hadrat Khawaja Sayyad Makhdoom Ashraf Jahangir, Chisti Qadiri, Semnani, the Sultan of Semnan (near present-day Tehran in Iran) traced his descent from the Seal of Prophet D through Imam Husayn, thus his descendants later were referred to as the Husayni Sayyads. He inherited his Sultanate peacefully from his father in 723 AH at the age of fifteen years. His ten-year reign was characterised by justice, honesty and peace for his subjects. In 733 AH, at the age of 25 years, he laid down his title and went in search of spiritual wisdom by travelling through many countries and sitting with many renowned Scholars and Sufi Masters. During this time, he initiated personally with the Grand Shaykh, Hadrat Shah 'Ala-ul’ Haq Pandawi. Notable contemporaries were Hadrat Khawaja Bandah Ghaysudaraz, Makhdoom Shah Mina, Hadrat Shaykh Ala‘al-Dawla Semnani, Hadrat Khawaja Hafiz Shiraz, Hadrat Khawaja Bahauddin Naqshband, Imam ‘Abdallah Yafa'-Iy' and Hadrat Shaykh Sayyad Jalal-ul Din Bukhari.
Hadrat Khawaja Sayyad Makhdoom Ashraf Jahangir Semnani settled in Kicchocha in Northern India and established this as their base to serve and propagate Islam. Whilst in Kicchocha, he named his Khalifah and Successor as Hadrat Sayyad ‘Abd al-Razzaq Nur al-‘Ayn in 765 AH. He was a nephew of Hadrat Khawaja Sayyad Makhdoom Ashraf Jahangir Semnani and became the driving force behind the further strengthening of the Chishti Qadiri Ashrafi Tarîqah founded by Hadrat Khawaja Sayyad Makhdoom Ashraf Jahangir Semnani. From this time onwards, Hadrat Khawaja Sayyad Makhdoom Ashraf Jahangir spent many years travelling in search of spiritual wisdom and when he eventually died in 808 AH, at the age of one hundred years, he was laid to rest in Kicchocha Shareef, where he was buried and his shrine erected.
The Ashrafi Family, or Ashrafi Sayyads as they were also known, continued to flourish in North India and were characterised by their willingness to travel in the way of Allah, Most Sublime, spreading the truth of His spiritual message, and being renowned public orators. Up until today, everywhere around the world that Muslims from the subcontinent have spread, his family name is honoured and his praises sung.
The Ashrafi Sayyads were given a new resurgence in the 13th century AH by the life and mission of A'laHadrat Sayyad Ali Hussein 'Ashrafi Miya'who was an outstanding spiritual figure in his time, attracting many to initiate with him and taking the spiritual message of Islam to many lands.
A'laHadrat Sayyad Ali Hussein 'Ashrafi Miya' , was the maternal father of Hadrat Sayyad Shah Mawlana Ahmad Ashraf, who was, in turn, the maternal grandfather of Shaykh al-Islam, ‘Allama Sayyad Muhammad Madani Mian. Mawlana Sayyad Shah Ahmad Ashraf became the spiritual guide and tutor of his nephew, Sayyad Abul Muhamid Muhammad Ashrafi al-Jilani, the Muhaddith al-Azam al-Hind, who was, in turn, the father of Shaykh-al-Islam, ‘Allama Sayyad Muhammad Madani Ashrafi al-Jilani.It was from this powerful spiritual lineage that Shaykh al-Islam Sayyad Muhammad Madani Ashrafi al-Jilani inherited his capacity for spiritual wisdom and his earnest devotion to the ways of Allah, Most Glorious. Shaykh al-Islam, ‘Allama Sayyad Muhammad Madani Ashrafi al-Jilani's paternal grandfather was the noted Hakim, Hadrat Shah Sayyad Nadhar Ashraf, who was revered as a scholar, poet and benefactor to the poor.
Hadrat Shaykh al-Islam, ‘Allama Sayyad Muhammad Madani Ashrafi al-Jilani took initiation from his Uncle Shaykh al Mashaykh, al-Haj, Sayyad Muhammad Mukhtar Ashraf, Ashrafi al-Jilani 'Sarkar-e-Kalan'(b. 1342 AH), who was the spiritual head of the Ashrafi Tariqah in Kicchocha Shareef. This initiation took place on 26 Shawwal 1381, from which time Hadrat Sayyad Muhammad Mukhtar Ashraf treated Hadrat Shaykh al-Islam as a son and bestowed the Khilafat on him.
At the time of the Blessed ‘Urs of Muhaddith al-A'zam al-Hind in Shawwal 1381, there was a huge gathering including his noble family, many Grand Scholars, Mashaikh, mureeds, and well wishers. The entire gathering pronounced Hadrat Shaykh al-Islam ‘Allama Sayyad Muhammad Madani Ashrafi al-Jilani by acclamation as head of the Ashrafi Sayyads worldwide. He then returned to the Jamiah for a further three years to study the rational sciences and Hadîth under the Shaykh al-Hadîth of the Jami’ah Ashrafiyah Mubarakpur. Finally he was given his ijazah and underwent the ceremony of the tying of his turban on 10th Shawwal 1382 AH/1963 CE.
Hadrat Shaykh al-Islam Sayyad Muhammad Madani Ashrafi al-Jilani married on 26th Sha’ban 1384 (27 November 1964) and has since then devoted his entire life to teaching, giving spiritual counsel and inspiring many good works in all countries where his mureeds have spread.
